Become a Global Entrepreneur: Madagascar-Year officially kicked-off |
|
A meeting on January 11th with representatives of the Embassy of Madagascar, the Chamber of Commerce of the Mahajanga province and Ex-Change laid the basis for a very promising cooperation in 2011. From 15 to 23 October, Ex-Change will organize a Business Travel to Madagascar: a unique opportunity to a tailor-made introduction to this vast, promising and entrepreneurial country. About 15 pre-selected companies will be involved in the preparation of this trip. During the year, several activities are scheduled in preparation of the visit, the expected outcome of which is a direct business contact between Flemish and Malagasy companies. On April 26th, during our first event for Company Club Members, the concept will be officially presented. |

Ecology is BusinessCO2logic for all your Carbon Credits
|
|
Whilst increasing its impact, Ex-Change is also decreasing its ecological footprint. Our new Business plan aims at 30 to 40% reduction in Green House Gas (GHG) emissions whereas international travel is concerned. In a further effort to reduce the ecological footprint of our projects, we’re also offering opportunities to our partners in the South to benefit from so-called Carbon Credits. For this, Ex-Change is setting up a partnership with CO2logic. CO2logic, a world leading carbon consultancy and advisory firm and works with public and private sector companies to help them calculate, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions to go 'CO2 Neutral'. Additionally it facilitates the accreditation of carbon reduction projects in the least developed countries. Least Developed Countries have been at the centre of much discussion relating to the Carbon Markets and there is much aspiration to encourage the development of projects in these countries. It appears more and more likely that the future international climate change discussions will further reinforce this point and seek to further encourage the development of carbon reduction projects in the Least Developed Countries such as on the African continent. |
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a flexible mechanism by which developed parties invest in developing economies and LDC (non-Annex I Party) for the purpose of reducing GHG emissions along with the promotion of sustainability principles in developing countries.

However, obtaining these CERs is not an easy feat; CO2logic is currently helping a series of “efficient woodstove” projects, bagasse, biogas projects, landfill, biomass, industrial efficiency and renewable energy projects (such as wind and hydropower) to fulfill the required criteria and application documents so as to benefit from carbon revenues. Ex-Change would like to encourage applicants and experts to give due attention to the possibilities of Certified Emission Reduction. An opportunity to make a difference... who helps?:
100 kg of Macadamia nuts to Belgium |
|
Gino de Rycke, expert for Ex-Change, was recently in Malawi for a project with a cooperative farming company called Zakudimba. Although his project had a broad “general management” scope, he also focused on products that could potentially be exported to Europe. One product was of specific interest to him: the Macadamia nut. These nuts, known as a delicacy in chocolates and used in (edible) oils, have the highest amount of beneficial monounsaturated fats of any known nut. |

“This is not a charity-project,” he insists, “I think they can be ‘in business’. But obviously, a first delivery is needed to check on quality and other issues”. So... the question remains: amongst our network of thousands of experts and volunteers, does anyone see a possibility to transport this quantity to Belgium? |
Besides, they’re a desirable ingredient in cosmetics, especially in skincare products. In their hard shell, they’re well protected and wouldn’t need a “cold chain” transport. This product may well hold the future of Zakudimba... “if someone could assist me in transporting 100 kg of these nuts to Belgium, I’ll make sure they get into the right hands. I have a few business contacts that could very well use a source of Macadamia nuts.” Says Gino. |
Gino happens to be an expert in the production of edible (nut-)oils as well. He produces these oils himself – purely as an amateur – for family and friends and for a few top-end (even Michelin-rated) restaurants in Belgium. Producing Macadamia-oil is also the next challenge for himself... This story is, hopefully, to be continued...! For more information, please contact Kris at kris.binon@ex-change.be. |
